American Brokers Ukraine Talks in Abu Dhabi as White House Seeks for Peace Deal

Diplomatic talks including American, Russian, and Kyiv delegates commenced in Abu Dhabi this Tuesday, representing the most recent stage in efforts to broker a ceasefire deal to resolve the ongoing conflict in the region.

High-Level Participants and Opening Talks

American military official the US representative apparently held talks with a Moscow delegation on the eve of the talks, with negotiations extending into the following day.

“Negotiations are advancing smoothly with continued optimism. He is working in tight alignment with Washington as discussions unfold,” his spokesperson remarked.

Ukraine’s top intelligence official, Kyrylo Budanov, was anticipated to take part in the proceedings, though the exact format was uncertain whether direct talks with Moscow’s delegates would happen or if separate bilateral meetings would be held.

Identity of the Russian delegation was uncertain. “No comment is available. We are following the media reports,” a Russian representative told official outlets.

Background and Revised Peace Plan

These meetings follow prior discussions in Switzerland where US and Ukrainian representatives reworked a preliminary American proposal for ending the conflict.

Russia has not yet endorsed the latest iteration of the plan and is unlikely to agree to many of the Kyiv revisions.

Moscow’s top diplomat, the Russian diplomat, emphasized that any revised peace plan must embody the “essence and wording” of what was agreed during previous summit meetings between the two nations.

International Responses and Concerns

EU leaders are apparently struggling to remain involved in the negotiations as American officials drive the efforts.

The Finnish leader, a European figure, who has stepped forward as a key interlocutor between the US and EU leaders, commented that the immediate future would be critical in efforts to reach a resolution.

He reportedly spoke with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Nato officials, stating that “The future of Ukraine is for Ukraine to decide, and while European security matters are for Europe to resolve.”

At the same time, the French president, Emmanuel Macron, warned against a peace deal that would amount to a “surrender” for Ukraine.

“The current proposal indicates what Moscow might find acceptable. But does this imply it should be endorsed by Ukraine and Europe? The answer is no,” he stated.

Specifics of the Initial US Proposal

American proposal was reportedly made up of numerous clauses and was based on dialog between US and Russian officials, with input from Kyiv security officials.

Key aspects of the plan allegedly involved:

  • The nation surrendering territory currently held by Russia
  • Additional regions that would be expected to be voluntarily given up
  • Limits on the scale of the Ukrainian army
  • Immunity for all parties in the conflict regarding violations

Recent Events and Ongoing Difficulties

The US official reportedly traveled to Kyiv to inform Zelenskyy on the proposal and press quick approval.

The pressure, coupled with the disclosure of the plan, reportedly shocked Kyiv and EU officials.

Zelenskyy reportedly that the country was facing one of the most difficult moments in its existence and was being forced to decide between “losing our dignity or losing a key ally.”

Later, Driscoll briefed alliance representatives on the proposal in the capital, with one attendee labeling it as “an extremely difficult session” and noting that EU officials were stunned by both the content and tone of the presentation.

The US administration later moderated its position, indicating that the 28-point plan was an “starting position for talks” rather than a final ultimatum.

Security Situation Amid Negotiations

While diplomatic talks proceed, Russian forces has maintained its nightly attacks on Ukrainian urban centers.

Russian forces allegedly fired numerous of missiles and hundreds of unmanned aircraft at objectives in and around the capital, according to Ukrainian reports.

The Ukrainian president stressed that the Kremlin must not believe it could prevail in the war while negotiations were ongoing.

“The priority is coordinated diplomatic movement among all partners, through shared endeavors. Sanctions and pressure on Moscow must yield outcomes,” he affirmed.

The capital’s leader confirmed that multiple people had been fatally injured in the overnight assault on the capital.
