While Swimmers Ran From Violence, Viral Image Depicts Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent resident of Bondi, has always considered the iconic coast as her personal space. On that particular weekend evening, she, like many others in the area, detected loud noises reverberating across the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I considered it was still too bright and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. She left her apartment, she saw people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore told her trouble had occurred.

While standing on the road, conversing with a pair who had rushed up the slope in their swimwear, she heard someone moving up from behind. It was a lifeguard, running at full speed in the direction of Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this flash of blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. He was alone running in the direction that everyone was trying to escape from, carrying that large equipment and barefoot … He moved at something that surely every fibre in your being would tell you to run in the opposite direction.

“Without a second thought, but just fully maximum effort running.”

An Iconic Image of Courage Amidst Tragedy

The image Ching captured of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of acts of valour in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with other rescuers, police and paramedics caring for dozens of those hurt.

Local Response and Support

Doolan’s story was a single example among several to come out of the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the site of the violence transforming into a makeshift hospital. Reports indicate that colleagues were also seen taking action, such as rushing into the ocean to assist people who were struggling.

Following the tragedy, messages of gratitude were shared. An online statement expressed thanks for the responders who exhibited that “goodness will always overcome evil”.

The group of rescuers issued a communication, explaining they were “coming to terms with what transpired”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful sentiments and solidarity. We are overwhelmed by the kindness shown towards our team,” the group stated. “In time, we will recount our experiences in the belief that it supports those impacted.”

Official Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that employs many permanent lifeguards, stated that the team rose to the occasion from the instant the shooting commenced right into late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many moving accounts, but the viral image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help preserve life is remarkable,” stated a council representative.

“Our lifeguards show altruism every day in keeping our iconic shores safe for visitors, but what we saw on that evening should be highly praised.

“As we grieve and process the atrocity of this heinous act of violence, I think it is vital that we focus on just how much good we have seen in the midst of such darkness.”
